Pre Operative Skin Preparation

Type: New Contract Reference: 2023/S 000-026367 Supply Route: Stocked, Blue Diamond, eDirect
Start Date: 3 June 2024 Expiry Date: 2 June 2026

The framework for Pre Operative Skin Preparation starts on 3 June 2024, runs for 24 months and ends on 2 June 2026. There is an option to extend for an additional 24 months.

The products are all used as part of the prepping process prior to surgery, for example shaving the patient, marking the patient, and cleaning the hands of the medical staff.

Areas covered
There are three product Lots that feature within the framework renewal:

  • Lot 2 – Skin Markers
  • Lot 3 – Scrub Brushes and accessories
  • Lot 4 – Clippers (pivot and fixed head).

The products available on this framework are used as part of the prepping process prior to surgery, for example shaving the patient, marking the patient, and cleaning the hands of the medical staff.

Please note: Razor products (Lot 1) have been delisted from the Pre Operative Skin framework and are now available via the Skin Cleansing and Disinfection framework. This is because NICE guidelines advise it is not necessary to remove hair routinely to reduce the risk of skin infection, and the use of razors may increase the risk of infection. If hair needs to be removed, this should be done by healthcare staff using clippers with a single-use head on the day of the surgery. See our Useful Links section to view the NICE guidance in full.

The framework offers the opportunity to purchase nail picks as a standalone product, offering both financial and sustainability benefits. Guidance from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Association for Perioperative Practice (AfPP) recommends only the use of a nail pick for aseptic handwashing. See our Useful Links section to view the WHO guidance, as well as our case study on the nail pick solution. See our Downloads section to read the AfPP guidance.
